For many people it can be hard to get in shape when you’re over 40 years old. Is it only possible to look good if you’re young or famous with a lot of resources for personal trainers and chefs? Absolutely not - you can get fit over 40 as long as you go about it the right way.

How are you able to reach this goal when it seems like you’re fighting an uphill battle, so to speak? The best way to stay young and fresh is to build some muscle. You can build muscle without looking like a body builder; instead, you’ll increase strength and firm up. If you do strength training a couple times each week, no matter what your age, then you can look great and feel even better.

You should also know that even a little bit of strength training can improve your sex appeal. Many forty-somethings find themselves newly single and back on the dating scene after many years of marriage. If you are recently divorced then you probably need a few workouts to get back to your best self since first impressions are key in dating, career and most other areas of your life. You’ll also get an extra boost to your self-confidence through regular activity.

Beyond looking great, gaining muscle during the “experienced” years can help in other ways, too. For instance, do you find yourself constantly exhausted? People these days are constantly on the go and often overwhelmed. If you feel like you’re being run into the ground, finding time every week to work out can really help. Strength training can provide you with an incredible energy boost. You’ll find yourself feeling stronger and more refreshed in no time. You’ll be better able to handle whatever life throws at you, both mentally and physically.

It doesn’t stop there, though. Let’s face it, there are many health problems that start to plague us as we age. The older we get, the more we increase our risk of getting sick. Even the common cold and flu seem to be attracted to us like magnets. By exercising and building muscle, you can actually give your immune system the power it needs to fight off common ailments. While everyone else in your office is sniffling and sneezing, you’re likely to be sharp, focused and feeling fine.

You should also know that you can really build up your bones by working out. For women this is especially important to keep in mind. Women are more likely to have problems with bone density and many go on to develop osteoporosis. Keeping fit and active is one way to minimize this risk. You can also limit any kind of joint pain that often accompanies aging by staying in shape and building muscle.

Watching what you eat and staying fit can be a total plan that acts as a defense against aging and keeps you feeling young and healthy. You’ll reduce your risk of many harmful diseases by keeping lean and trim through weight training and other healthful activities.

You can stay in shape and get fit over 40 by following some simple guidelines on a consistent basis. When you watch what you eat, build some muscle and stay active, you’ll feel better than you did at 20!
